1) Be your child’s cheerleader – encourage them to do their homework, praise them when they do it well.
2) Interdependence is better than independence – your child will benefit from your guidance and support – sometimes a little nudge in the right direction really gets things rolling.
3) Your child should be the pilot – be there to assist, but let them call the shots.
4) Check in on your child – are they meeting their goals or have they put things off?
5) Challenge your child – ask them to evaluate their own work and then push themselves a little farther.
6) Limit the amount of time spent on homework – a reasonable goal is 10 minutes per grade that they are in – i.e. a fourth grader should be doing around 40 minutes of homework.
7) Laugh often – homework can become laborious and difficult, find ways to lighten up and laugh. 🙂
